Z4p Loco detail questions

Inlägg av rich_eason »

Hi

I am in the process of scratch building a Z4p for the 1/35 project and require some help regarding specific details on the loco.

I have built the general shape of the loco and I am trying to identify a specific loco to model. Clearly over the life of the locos many modifications, additions and preserved examples received alternative fitments and alterations making my (distant) research some what of a challenge!

Noticing that the cab windows vary (Square framed and Rounded Rubber Seal windows) and I have chosen to model the presumed earlier Square window type.

The questions I have are:

- Were the locos all fitted with the external bonnet mounted radiator/oil cooler from new? If not when were they fitted (generally)?
- Some locos have a horn mounted on the vertical window pane pointing down, and others have the horn recessed inside the cab. Was this a later modification to the locos and did all locos have this modification?

No doubt I will have more questions in the near future, but grateful for any help...

Thanks

Hi Rich,

from number 258 and onward the engine was Scania D812 which required the external oil-radiator. Obviously the oil-radiator was fitted to older numbers too, perhaps because of engine upgrades, perhaps because the extra oil cooling capacity was benefitial for the Scania D802 too, used in earlier idividuals.

The rubberframed windows was installed during revisions in the 60ths, and all "squered" Z4p had the woodframed rectangular windows when the left the factory.

The external horn, I think was modification made on the individiuals operated in the south part of "Roslagsbanan". Number 260 mainly operated in the north part (Uppsala, Rimbo, Hallstavik) has the internal horn, but 261, 263, and 266, mainly operated at the south have the external horn.

Also note that some indivuals where fitted with lifting fixtures (for hooks) in the corners, and that all individuals fitted to be pair (or even up to four) operated have the "two chamber" coupeling installed. These individuals also hava an extra highpressure air pipe runing along the loco, and the installation follows no standard to my observations.

I hope this helps.

Many thanks this is all very useful information.

One item I forgot to include in my original post (sorry another question) is - what controls are fitted to the short bonnet cab bulkhead, if any at all? I have photos of the long bonnet bulkhead controls but only know of the tool box on the short. Were any controls replicated?

This is 321. No controls, except the window vipers.

The cabinet contained mainly tools and spare parts.

Also, the earlier mentioned oil cooler is for the hydraulic transmission fluid, not for the motor oil. It was located inside the front bonnet on the earliest locos.
