YO1p in 1/35 scale

Inlägg av rich_eason »

Following on from all the very useful information provided in the thread http://www.smalsparigt.org/cgi-bin/phpB ... 3809#p3809 work has finally started on the YO1p project.

Unfortunately at this time it is nothing more glamorous than a set of cosmetic A end bogie sideframes, however there is still some work required to get the frames into a completed state. To start off with, a good general tidy up of the plasticard is required to remove any residue of liquid poly adhesive, cutting flash and filler, and a general "square up". I have also made the assumption that the bogies are mirror images of each others, as I could not find any other information which contradicted this.

A not particularly exciting picture of them in build is attached below...

The bogies currently lack any relief or rivet detail and a number of experiments were trailed with various sized pin heads to replicate this, however the results were not satisfactory. Therefore I have ordered some "Rivet Transfers" from Archer Transfers in the United States [link]http://www.archertransfers.com/AR88001.html[/link]. These are effectively waterslide transfers but instead of the usual printed decal on carrier film, they are a type of polymer dropped onto the film to provide the detail. Upon the arrival these will be positioned on to the various locations on the side frames for the rivet detail.

I am not happy with the upper suspension springs, which for the time being are HO Sergent buckeye coupler springs. These to my eye are not substantial enough and do not represent the prototype. I have managed to source some alternatives however they are too long and being springs, they are hardened steel and thus very difficult to cut accurately. In the meantime I will continue to look and see if I can find any other alternatives, otherwise I will have to "try" and accurately cut the springs. Replacement of the springs is an easy job with the side frame having the ability to be disassembled.

Once again, apologies for this post in English, I though as a thank you to the help you provided I thought you would like to see progress with this project and thanks again for all your help thus far.

Please share your experience of the rivet decals when you have received them. How high are they? To apply rivets just before painting sounds too good to be true to someone used to punch them out from the back of a sheet of brass.

And you do not need to apologies for the English. We study English from third grade in school. With such interesting subject the motivation to read is much higher than with school books. :-)

Well funnily enough the transfers have arrived this morning. I ordered them on Tuesday from the States so service wise...its fantastic.

Looking at them I was a little apprehensive but as you run your finger over you certainly can feel the texture. It recommends on the instructions that if you wish to build up more texture, then you simply add additional decals over a previously applied one. The accompanying description says "Surface Decals are resin cast directly onto a continuous sheet of Microscale clear decal film so that the desired amount must be cut from the sheet prior to application". They are also compatible with Microsol and Microset.

I have also managed to find some better springs more representative of the prototype so once I've riveted the frames I'll get some more images up.

As mentioned in the previous post, I had managed to source some better suspension springs, more representative of the prototype. These have been trimmed and the original, somewhat smaller springs replaced. Ones the sideframes have been mounted onto the bogies the screw threads and bolts will be trimmed, cleaned up and tightened down properly.

Also last night I applied the Archer transfers that arrived in the morning. The rivets come on the transfer sheet at a pre-determined "pitch" e.g. the space between the rivets. So unless you are trying to achieve the same pitch then, you have to apply each rivet one by one.

As a product I'd rate them, they certainly provide an easier alternative to riveting however there are a couple of points to note.

Unlike most waterslide transfers, these do not need to be soaked, they literally require only a very quick dip in the water, before the transfers wants to slide off the backing sheet. On a couple of occasions the residual water on the end of the tweezers was enough to get the transfer sliding.

You will need a transfer setting solution such as Microsol or Microset. I tried without and the transfers just would not bond onto the shiny surface of the plasticard.

Anyway another pic, apologies for the flash...
